Chapter Nineteen
Rosanna
I donât know if Iâll ever be able to leave this room. I canât believe I propositioned Ben last night. Maybe it was the champagne. Or the dancing. Or the foot rub. But something possessed me.
I tried to shake the crazy idea, but by the time I had struggled out of my straight-jacket dress, showered, and put on my pyjamas, the thought was firmly planted and I couldnât let it go.
The dress. It must have been the dress. It cut off the blood supply to my brain. Itâs the only plausible explanation for why I had the audacity to go into Benâs room and hit him with my crazy idea.
And he was so lovely about it. So kind and compassionate.
The problem is, even though I canât believe I did it, and Iâm mortified at my boldness, I meant every word I said. And if he didnât hate the idea, if he thought it might be something he would be happy to do, I would do it in a heartbeat.
The more pressing problem, however, is how I gather the courage to leave my room and face him. Because at the moment, my plan is Schrodingerâs cat. It may or may not be possible. When I leave this room, Iâll know. One way or the other. If itâs a no, I donât know how weâll move forward. Oh, yeah, thereâs also the small point that Iâll be crushed.
I hear Benâs door open and close. Heâs going for his morning run. I have about half an hour to put my big girl panties on and decide how to handle this.
I could go with the âoh, donât take any notice of me, I was drunkâ defence. Which I wasnât. I was no more than slightly mellow.
Or thereâs the complete amnesia angle: âI have no recollection of such a conversationâ. But my friendship with Ben means too much to me to lie.
There really is only one option. Honesty.
I must drift offâI didnât get much sleep last night, for obvious reasonsâbecause the next thing I know, thereâs a knock at my door. Oh, God.
âYes?â I struggle to sit up, pushing my hair out of my face and pulling the covers up my chest. Which is ridiculous, given heâs seen me naked. But still.
Benâs head appears around the door. My cheeks burn.
âThought you might like some breakfast.â He comes into the room, still sweaty from his run, with a keep-it cup of coffee and a brown bag containing, Iâm pretty sure, my favourite herb and cheese muffin. He really is too good to be true.
âThank you.â I canât even look him in the eye. So how are we going to ⦠ugh.
He hands them over and retreats but turns when he gets to the door.
âI need a shower. When Iâm done, I thought we could talk about what happened last night. No pressure from me. If youâve changed your mind, thatâs totally fine. I figured you might have questions or whatever.â
Before I can answer, heâs out the door.
